T O P I C R E V I E WRobert PearlmanNASA has designed an emblem for the 40th anniversary of Apollo, which will be highlighted as part of the agency's "First Footprints" commemoration, celebrating Apollo under the theme, "Exploring Space, Discovering Earth".(There is also a rasterized version of the logo.)The art is not Apollo 11 specific, marking a departure from the earlier anniversaries.NASA's decision to go with a non-mission specific logo was influenced by the input of several Apollo astronauts, including Neil Armstrong, who felt that the focus of the celebration should be on the entire program.Robert PearlmanSpace history enthusiasts have designed emblems that are specific to Apollo 11's 40th anniversary in July 2009.The logo on the left was created by Colin Mackellar for the anniversary celebrations in Canberra, Australia. The emblem on the left was designed as a limited edition patch by Jerry Czubinski, Andrew Li and graphic artist Eric Pickett.Robert PearlmanMarc Jacobs, who has designed insignias for the astronauts, shares his version of NASA's "Apollo 40 Years" emblem. I saw the "official" logo for the Apollo 11 40th anniversary. I like the simplicity and use of the Earth-rise. And I understand the desire to not just commemorate the first moon landing, but everyone involved in the entire Apollo program. However, I think that the designer(s) should have included something from Apollo 11. Therefore, I have attached my rough revision.thisisajobCongratulations NASA on yet another uninspired logo. I don't know what else to say - maybe hire some graphic artists outside the agency? Boring fonts and a lifeless image - the eagle adds a lot to the overall look. What's with the moon - does it even look right to anyone? What's with the color - brown? Come on!sathrusI want to thank Jerry, Andrew, & Eric for making the Apollo 11 40 Ann. patch it will add nicely to my collection.Robert PearlmanHere is NASA's 40th logo animation:bernoullisI thought I would just add another patch to the 40th Anniversary 'mix'. Colin Mackellar's work on the Apollo 11 anniversary patch, which can also been seen above, gave me the impetus to have a go at a 'refresh' of the NASA Apollo patch. Colin has very kindly hosted the result at the Honeysuckle Tracking Station website. Please feel free to use it, but a credit would be appreciated if at all possible. Many thanks.Robert PearlmanNancy Schaff, Education and Public Outreach Coordinator at Cornell University's Center for Radiophysics and Space Research has a supply of Apollo 40th anniversary patches and decals available, left over from their celebration in July. We held a public event in July to celebrate the 40th anniversary of the Apollo 11 lunar landing. We have some patches and stickers left over if anyone is interested in purchasing some (I'm just trying to recover most of the costs - I'm offering the stickers below cost). A photo is available with information about purchasing at my website. The stickers are a beautiful high quality glossy image - the official NASA 40th Anniversary logo (3" x 3" square). The patches are 4" in diameter and are beautiful, with a felt background (based on the original Apollo 11 patch - very nice). Update: Nancy shares that the patches have sold out; decals are still available.Update: All the patches and decals are now sold out.
