The SMS Product Line:
Our first globe, in development for two years, is a 24-inch diameter photorealistic rendition of Mars, complete with cruciform wooden display stand. The globe has been created using Mars Global Surveyor imagery, with the assistance of Malin Space Science Systems of San Diego (MSSS built and operates the Mars Orbiter Camera aboard MGS).
Planetary Terrain Models
SMS offers a series of planet surface models, mounted on walnut bases and hand-painted with accurate terrain colors. The early selection includes portions of Mars (Gusev crater is proving quite popular as the first Mars Exploration Rover landing site), to be followed by the Moon, and Jupiter's moons Io, Europa, and Ganymede. Many of our Mars terrain models are being fabricated directly from three dimensional data gathered by the Mars Orbiter Laser Altimeter (MOLA) aboard the Mars Global Surveyor (MGS) spacecraft. The accuracy of the models is driven by the recorded data, making these representations uncannily precise. The vertical exaggeration of the features is a few times what is real, but only enough to allow for discernible shadows in normal room light.
Spacecraft Desk Models
SMS offers custom spacecraft model production services for display models of historical, contemporary, and future launch vehicles and spacecraft.
Spacecraft Hobby Kits and Build-ups
Our first two resin and photoetch kits will be a 1/48 scale model of a moon lander designed by famed space artist Chesley Bonestell in 1959, and a 1/144 scale model of a future nuclear-powered solar system exploration ship.
Decals and Custom Decal Art Services
The decal page is now open, with markings available for the Saturn V launch vehicle and Apollo spacecraft in different scales. An expanded decal product and custom services page will be posted shortly.
Astronomical & Space Hardware Art
Limited and open edition giclee prints of space art by Rick Sternbach and other artists will be offered.
Space Model Systems is run by space artist and model maker Rick Sternbach, a winner of the 1980 Emmy Award for visual effects on the PBS miniseries COSMOS and senior illustrator for the Star Trek franchise for 15 years. Other artists and technicians who may from time to time be enlisted to work on SMS projects are all well-versed in astronomical subjects, visual effects, and model making, bringing a true devotion to detail and accuracy to the field.
