| Go4Launch | Boeing released stickers and other items depicting "license plates" for the three Apollo lunar roving vehicles; yet photos don't seem to show any license plates on the vehicles themselves. So was the concept of an actual plate just fantasy on Boeing's part? |
| Cozmosis22 | Am guessing that those "license plates" were just for fun and never intended to go to the moon. |
| SkyMan1958 | Dave Scott took ~ 15 of them with him to the Moon. He carried them with him at all times that he was on the lunar surface. |
| FullThrottle | What does a lunar rover license plate look like?! All these years and I never knew or realized it actually had a license plate! Was it also made by prisoners? |
| Rusty B | A personalized plate? NASA (Not All Stamps Authorized) |
| ilbasso | This was a souvenir reproduction that Boeing distributed back in 1971. The small print at the bottom reads, "Replica of the Apollo 15 License Plate for the First Manned Lunar Roving Vehicle." |
| lspooz | Okay, I've followed the RR Auction for one of Dave Scott's original 15 lunar rover license plates but with more than a week left the next bid is over $7200... Not bad for a flown/EVA artifact. While I'd love to win this, with the cost approaching a significant fraction of the cost of my own electric vehicle (LEAF) I'll probably have to pass. My question is: have any of these 15 been sold before? Any others out there [perhaps I should post as WTB]? Or should I contact Dave Scott directly? |
| SkyMan1958 | Here's a link to when, and for how much, various of these have gone for... |
| lspooz | Thanks for the link - that actually makes me feel better since the plate will sell for a price SO FAR out of my reach [rather than just barely out-of-budget] that it won't be so tantalizing! |
