Philip | Can we have a show of hands here on collectSPACE of how many people on here are members of the British Interplanetary Society? I've been buying "Spaceflight" as loose issues since 1976, member since 1998, Fellow since 2009. My son is the youngest ever BIS-member and he hopes to become the oldest BIS-member ever by 2061 (when Halley's comet comes back). |
Rex Hall | I have been a member since 1974. |
DChudwin | I have been a Fellow for many years, although dues for U.S. members have been pricey, especially since we cannot participate in the meetings at BIS Headquarters in London. However, Spaceflight, the monthly BIS publication, is outstanding. |
OLDIE | I've been a member (later a Fellow) of the Society since 1971. Two things encouraged me to join. First, I saw some actual samples of moon rock (on display in London). Second, the address of the Society was published in a little collectors' Space booklet issued by Brooke Bond Tea. There were actually two versions of this, a British version and a Canadian version. |
ColinBurgess | In my days of flying as cabin crew with Qantas I used to travel to London quite regularly and would catch the Tube over to BIS headquarters to pick up the most recent issues of "Spaceflight." When Rex Hall was elected President of the BIS and with retirement looming for me, he convinced me to become a member so that I could continue to receive (and write for) the magazine. So yes, count me in. |
gliderpilotuk | Member for about the last 5 years. — Paul |
lm5eagle | Been a member for over a year now. Biggest regret - not having joined years ago. Not easy to get to meetings, but 'Spaceflight' makes membership highly worthwhile. |
KenDavis | Member since 1983. |
space4u | Been a member for several years. Nothing like Spaceflight Magazine. — Marcy |
astro-nut | I, too, am a member of the British Interplanetary Society. I was a member starting in 1987 and then again in 2000. The only regret I have is that the membership for U.S. members is very EXPENSIVE! Thank you. |
Jay Gallentine | I am a member since 2005. |
art540 | I have been a member since 1996... |
cspg | And so I am! Since 1995 - I didn't know about BIS before that date. |
heng44 | I have been a member since 1991 and I try to make periodic contributions to their publication 'Spaceflight'. — Ed Hengeveld |
Rick Mulheirn | Me too; circa 30 years. |
Apollo-Soyuz | I have been a member since around 2004. |
Harald Kraenzel | I am member, too. At least for 20 years. |
Rex Hall | I buy a membership for a friend in Russia as a gift. I would hope some others could do so as well as a son. Philip's son in 60 years will break a record. On a recent anniversary we had a number of members who had joined 50 years ago. |
Philip | Indeed half a century BIS-member is the target to beat. My son joined at the age of 100 days |
spaceman | I have been a paid up member (before that I used to buy spaceflight when it sporadically appeared through the newsagents). My son has been a member and my daughter currently is. |
Philip | This year the British Interplanetary Society is celebrating its 80th birthday! Moreover, the BIS is looking to establish international branches, besides their regional UK groups. The Italians were first. |
Blackarrow | I'm not sure why I haven't posted on this thread before. I have been a member of the BIS since 1971 (I had just turned 16) and a Fellow for about the last 20 years. The rules of eligibility for a fellowship change over the years. I suspect I am only eligible nowadays because I'm already a Fellow! |
Mike Z | Rex Hall was a truly wonderful man!! His wife Lynn is also a really wonderful lady!! Rex is still very much missed.
