[b]Mission Control deconstructed[/b] The walls that once enclosed NASA's original Mission Control, the [URL=http://www.collectspace.com/news/news-050410a.html]Mercury Control Center[/URL] at Cape Canaveral Air Force Station, came tumbling down recently as the building's demolition began. Long ago emptied (its consoles used to support all the Mercury missions and three Gemini flights moved to the Kennedy Space Center Visitor Complex ten years ago), the building succumbed to "time and salt air," according to NASA. The decision to demolish the building was made in 2005 after it was estimated that it would cost the agency as much as $5 million to repair and restore.
