The public may not know his name, but his work has been seen around the world. Bill Taub documented the start of the U.S. human spaceflight program as a NASA photographer. While many of his photos are iconic, it is the contents of his unseen archives now being published for the first time that are the focus of JL Pickering and John Bisney's new book, "Photographing America's First Astronauts: Project Mercury Through the Lens of Bill Taub" (available from Purdue University Press).

Skylab at 50:

Fifty years ago Sunday (May 14), the first U.S. space station launched on the last Saturn V rocket to fly. The climb into Earth orbit did not go to plan and the orbital workshop was significantly damaged. Three crews of three astronauts each were not only able to save Skylab but set the foundation for future orbital laboratories. Stephen Bowen, who is on the International Space Station, credits seeing Skylab with getting him to where he is now.
